ORANGERIE, EXETER

2010

Brief: To replace an existing large, ill conceived conservatory (built in the 1990's) with a functional living space to the rear of a Grade 2 Listed Building.

Location: St. Leonard's Conservation area, Exeter.

Design:  An "Orangerie" style of design was chosen to achieve a good balance between the functional use of the space and its proportions. Painted glazed timber doors and windows set within rendered walls were used instead of upvc and glass. The roof was replaced with a flat roof, hidden behind a parapet with a large, central roof lantern. This improved on the design of the existing conservatory whose use was limited and whose design was unsympathetic in the context of the listed building.
