NEW HOUSE-CONSERVATION AREA
EXETER

2012

Brief: To create a 5 bedroom contemporary house, in the garden of a locally listed 1930s property.

Location : Heavitree Conservation Area, Exeter.

Design: The living accommodation of the house is arranged as two cubes on either side of a generous circulation space.  At first floor level, the two blocks are linked by a bridge with double height spaces on either side. A combination of cedar cladding and render, with large expanses of aluminium glazed windows and doors form the elevations. The flat roof hidden behind the parapet conceals solar thermal panels. The new dwelling was designed with reference to, but without direct copy of the locally listed 1930s neighbouring property. The houses sit alongside each other with a favourable compatibility. The design of the new dwelling to reflects domestic living of the 21st Century whilst optimising its site.
